Memorial Plaque to Walter O’ Shaughnessy

Walter O’Shaughnessy was born in Montreal, Quebec on 3rd April 1896 and was a salesman by occupation. He was a pre-war member of the Irish Canadian Rangers Militia Regiment and served with the 42nd Battalion, (Black Watch / Royal Highlanders of Canada) C.E.F., and was killed in action on 2nd June 1916 – the first day of the Battle of Mount Sorrel (or the ‘June Show’).The circumstances of death state " Instantly killed by enemy shell fire on the evening of June 2nd 1916, while his Battalion was taking up a position in support of the men who were holding the front line at Maple Copse, East of Zillebeke.

He is remembered with honour at the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.He had recently lost his Lance Corporal Stripes for drinking in an Estaminet during prohibited hours. He was awarded a Trio which were sent to his father along with this plaque. A cross was awarded to his mother.
